Can my camper attend multiple weeks of camp?
Yes! Campers are welcome to sign up for multiple weeks of camp.
Please note that each camp session is separate, and campers must leave RVR at the end of each week. Overnight stays between sessions are not permitted, so families will need to make arrangements for pick-up and drop-off between consecutive camp weeks.
Each week does repeat the same program and schedule. Many campers attend multiple weeks, however, and thoroughly enjoy experiencing RVR's wide range of activities more than once.
What should my camper bring with them?
A great camp experience starts with being prepared! We provide a detailed Packing List that includes:
- A general packing list for all camps
- Dress code guidelines
- Program-specific items to bring (and what to leave at home)
Label Everything!
To help keep every camper’s belongings safe and organized, we now require that all luggage brought to camp have a clearly labeled luggage tag. This simple step helps prevent lost items, ensures campers leave with the correct belongings, and allows our staff to efficiently manage check-in and check-out.
Tip: Use a permanent marker or waterproof tags for the best results.
Q: Why are luggage tags required for all camper belongings?
A: Luggage tags help us quickly identify bags and personal items, making arrival and departure smoother. They also reduce the chance of a camper’s luggage being misplaced, left behind, or taken home by the wrong family.
Q: What needs a luggage tag?
A: Every large item (suitcase, duffel bag, trunk, backpack, sleeping bag, etc.) must have a luggage tag with your camper’s first and last name clearly written. Smaller items like pillows or loose bedding should also be labeled in some way.
Q: What information should be on the luggage tag?
A: At minimum, your camper’s full name. If possible, include their session dates or cabin name. Please do not include home addresses or phone numbers for security reasons.
Q: What if we forget to bring luggage tags?
A: RVR may have a limited number of extra tags on hand at check-in, but this is not guaranteed. Parents are responsible for providing luggage tags for all camper belongings.
Q: How do luggage tags help at the end of camp?
A: At pick-up, luggage tags make it much easier for staff and families to identify bags and ensure campers leave with everything they brought.
Are personal electronic devices allowed?
Electronics Policy
At RVR, we value disconnecting from technology. Campers may not have electronics during the week.
- This includes smartphones, smartwatches, reading devices (Kindle), laptops, tablets, or any smart device that can connect to the internet.
- If your camper has a specific need for a device (e.g., medical monitoring), please speak with the Director at check-in to discuss options.
- Any electronics found during the week will be confiscated, and RVR reserves the right to dismiss your camper.
How can I contact my camper during the week?
We know it can be hard to be apart, so RVR offers a couple of ways for you to stay in touch with your camper while they’re here:
-
Email Service (Bunk Notes): Available through your online account ($1 per email, with package options). Emails are collected twice daily and delivered to campers at the next day’s mail call.
-
Traditional Mail: Letters can be sent to:
River Valley Ranch
Attn: Your Camper's Name
Your Camper's Program (i.e. Frontier Town Horsemanship)
4443 Grave Run Rd.
Manchester, MD 21102
Be sure to include your return address. To ensure delivery before camp ends, we recommend mailing letters no later than Tuesday of your camper’s week.
👉 Note: Campers cannot send outgoing emails, and their time to write letters back may be limited. If you don’t hear from them every day, it’s usually a sign they’re busy having fun and fully engaged in camp activities!
Can I see photos or videos of my camper during the week?
Yes! You can view photos during the week for free—maybe you’ll even spot your camper. If you see photos you love, digital downloads or prints are available (for a fee). After camp ends, photos remain available to purchase for a limited time. Instructions for viewing can be found on our Photos and Videos page.
At the end of each week, we also release a highlight video showcasing all the fun and excitement. These videos are free to watch and share on our Summer Camp Videos page and some of our social media channels.
While we have a limited multimedia team and many campers, we do our very best to capture every child enjoying their camp experience.
Can my camper make calls home?
Campers can make phone calls each day during afternoon free time starting on Tuesday. Phones are not available on Monday so campers can settle in and adjust to camp life, which helps reduce homesickness.
- Guidance: Campers cannot receive calls directly. We recommend discussing ahead of time how and when your camper might call, if at all. Calls are voluntary, so campers must initiate them themselves.
-
Caller ID: Calls may not show as coming from River Valley Ranch. If you see a call from an unfamiliar number during the afternoon, it could be your camper!
A note on calls: Over 70 years of experience has taught us that talking with parents can sometimes trigger homesickness, even for campers who are otherwise having a great time. Please keep this in mind when checking in with your camper.
Emergency Contact: If you need to reach your camper due to an emergency, call the RVR Camp Office at 443-712-1010 (Monday–Friday, 9:00am–9:00pm). Messages left after 9:00pm will be checked the following morning. For absolute emergencies after 9:00pm, email emergency@rivervalleyranch.com to receive our after-hours cell number. Leave a message, and a staff member will return your call as soon as possible.
What is RVR’s head lice policy?
Campers will be checked for head lice prior to admission. RVR follows a strict “no nit” policy, which is different from public school guidelines. Campers with lice or nits will be sent home for treatment and may only return after being cleared, to ensure the safety and well-being of all TNT, campers and staff.
-
Returning to Camp: Campers may return 24 hours after treatment (immediate return is allowed with proof of professional treatment), provided no nits are found by camp staff.
-
Personal Items: All clothing, bedding, and personal items must be properly treated before returning. Refer to the CDC website for detailed guidance on head lice and treatment.
How can you help?
Check your camper's head carefully 2–3 days before camp and treat if needed. Watch How to Check for Lice to learn how to do a head check at home.
RVR has partnered with MD Lice Control to offer discounted pre-camp head checks. For details, call 410-487-2899 or visit mdlice.com. Be sure to mention you are a patron of RVR.
What is the camper pick-up process?

All pick-ups will be drive-through. Please bring your ID so we can verify you are authorized to pick up your camper. If someone other than the person listed on the camp application will be picking up your camper, please email us by noon on Friday.
Overnight Campers:
-
Friday Pick-Up: 4:00–5:00pm at the location as drop-off.
-
Your camper and their luggage will be brought to your car— please do not exit your vehicle.

I noticed you are a Christian camp. What does that mean?
RVR’s mission is to cultivate a wholesome Christian environment where guests and staff may grow to their full God-given potential. This means that we believe all people have been created in God’s image and can have a personal relationship with Him through His son Jesus. We see the entire camp experience as one that shares the love of Jesus in both our words and actions. This is done through the formal communication that happens in our daily meetings/small groups and how well we love and care for each camper who comes to RVR. Our hope is that each camper will experience, as Jesus described it, “life to the fullest”!
RVR is a Christian camp, what does that mean?
RVR's Statement of Faith
If you have further questions about who we are and the Christian messages and values we teach, please contact us at 443-712-1010 or info@rivervalleyranch.com
How do you handle LGBTQ issues at camp?
For our camp programs, we welcome any camper or teen regardless of their gender identity. Our staff is trained to share the love of Jesus with all guests and provide a safe space for them. In order to create this environment, we have guidelines that need to be respected in order for gender issues to not become a disruption at camp. We want to share these with you in advance so that parents, along with their camper, can make an informed decision about whether or not RVR is the right fit. If your camper identifies as LGBTQ, please discuss these guidelines with them prior to registering them for camp, to make sure they can feel comfortable in this setting.
- Any camper or teen identifying as LGBTQ must not use their camp experience as an opportunity to try and force others to accept their viewpoint on gender identity. If the expression of their gender becomes disruptive, we may decide to remove them from the program for their own benefit and those around them.
- Conversely, if any camper or teen harasses or makes a significant issue with another who is identifying as LGBTQ, he/she may be asked to leave (Note: this would also be true for any individual who is harassing another individual for any reason).
- For those identifying as transgender, they will be housed with their biological birth gender. Our staff will use biological gender pronouns consistent with the housing in which the camper is staying or simply use their name. Transgender campers may request that others use their preferred pronouns, but may not make an issue if others prefer not to. Any camper or teen who is uncomfortable using the preferred pronoun may also simply use the transgender individual's name. If anyone anticipates this being a problem before attending, it may be better to refrain from coming to camp.
If you have further questions, please contact our office at info@rivervalleyranch.com
Registering for Camp
When does camp registration open?
Camp registration opens to the public on October 1 for the following summer. Online registration is preferred, but a mail or fax form is also available. (We do not accept registration by phone.)
Sessions are filled first come, first served, so it’s best to register as soon as possible.
What are the age requirements for attending camp?
RVR offers a variety of programs for different age groups:
-
Overnight Camp (ages 7-17):
- Cadets (ages 7-9)
- Fort Roller (ages 9-12)
- Frontier Town (ages 13-17)
- TNT (ages 14-17)
-
Day Camp (ages 4-10):

What happens if registration is full, is there a waitlist?
- If a camp program in your desired week is full, please contact our office at 443-712-1010 or info@rivervalleyranch.com to add them to the waitlist.
- Your camper is not officially registered or on the waitlist until the office confirms your request.
- Families are contacted in the order they join the waitlist when a spot becomes available.
- Being on the waitlist does not guarantee a spot, so we encourage families to plan accordingly.
Q: Will I be charged while my camper is on the waitlist?
A: No. You are not charged until your camper is officially enrolled in a session. If you were unable to make a deposit or payment during registration, this means your camper is not yet registered.
Q: Can I hold multiple weeks on the waitlist?
A: Yes! You can join the waitlist for multiple weeks, but each week is independent. If your camper is offered a spot, you’ll need to confirm enrollment before moving to the next week.
Q: Do waitlist families get any special considerations?
A: Families who join the waitlist before the pre-registration period ends will still be eligible for any early registration discounts if a spot opens up.
Do you accept credit cards for registration?
Yes. We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express for online, fax, and mail-in registrations.
We also accept checks for mailed registrations.
Is financial aid or a discount available?
Yes. Financial Aid, in the form of partial assistance grants, is available on a limited basis and in varying amounts. It is our desire that no camper miss out on an RVR experience due to financial circumstances; however, because aid is limited, we encourage families to seek support from alternative sources like relatives, churches, or community groups. To apply, please visit our Financial Aid page.
We also offer the following discounts (available upon request and may require validation):
-
Refer-a-Friend Discount – Receive $50 off for referring a first-time Overnight Camper ($25 off for Day Camp), or for being referred as a first-time camper by a current one! What are meals like at camp?
RVR's food service philosophy is summed up in our motto: “Feed the Stomach, Feed the Soul.” We believe nourishing campers goes beyond providing meals—it’s about creating an environment where relationships can grow. When people are hungry, it’s hard to connect or engage. By offering good, nutritious food, we help meet a basic need so campers can be open to others and, most importantly, to the gospel.
Campers receive three nutritious meals each day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—designed to fuel them for a full day of activities. Meals are served in communal dining spaces with their camps to build community and ensure everyone’s needs are met. We also make mealtimes fun and engaging for a meaningful experience. Our chefs carefully accommodate most dietary restrictions or special needs.
For those with dietary restrictions, options are offered at each meal.
|
Breakfast We try to provide a wide variety of options to accommodate different dietary needs. Providing a well-balanced meal that most campers will be familiar with helps fuel them for the day.
These are examples of what we serve during breakfast.

Lunch As campers have been busy with activities, we want to make sure they feel well fed and replenished to tackle the rest of the day. Providing a light but filling meal, they won't feel sluggish later.
These are examples of what we serve for lunch.

Dinner Now that campers are winding down from a busy day, we want to be sure that they are given a warm hearty dinner. This helps to re-energize them for evening activities and for a good night's rest.

Are there any limitations to the meals at camp?
While we aim to serve meals that the majority of campers enjoy, we recognize that not every camper will like everything. We offer menu variety, but cannot accommodate every individual need due to our setup and Health Department regulations.
Specialized Meals
- We cannot provide individualized specialized meals. If a camper cannot eat what is being served, we will try to find an alternative, but this must be the exception, not the rule.
Food Allergies
- We understand that some campers have food allergies and will do our best to support them.
- Campers must be able to identify their own allergies. For example, if a camper is lactose intolerant, they must know which dairy products to avoid. If unsure about ingredients in a meal, they should ask the Chef.
- At check-in, please notify the Health staff about any allergies so they can be documented on the camper's health form. Staff will do their best to help campers avoid allergens, but it is ultimately the camper's responsibility to manage their own diet.
- If you have questions or concerns about your camper's allergy, please contact us prior to their week of camp.
Bringing Your Own Food
- Due to Health Department regulations, food cannot be stored in the kitchen or in cabins.
- If a camper cannot eat most of the meals provided, you may send supplemental nutrition bars (e.g., PowerBars, granola bars) or nutritional shakes (e.g., Ensure) with them. These items will be kept by the Health Center and can be picked up after meals.
- To protect TNT, campers, and staff with severe or life-threatening allergies, do not send food or drinks to share unless pre-approved by camp staff. All shared snacks must be store-bought with visible ingredient labels, and items containing nuts should be avoided whenever possible.
Where do overnight campers stay?
Our property is divided into two main campuses for overnight campers:
Fort Roller (ages 7-12):
- Campers stay in themed Fort housing, including dorms, teepees, and wagons located on a scenic hill overlooking the Gunpowder River Valley.
- Cabins are modern, climate-controlled buildings with in-house bathrooms. Teepees and wagons have easy access to detached modern bathroom facilities, but are not air-conditioned (these areas are well-shaded and equipped with ceiling or exhaust fans).
Frontier Town (ages 13-17):
- Classic Camp: Campers stay in 'Muddy Creek', 'The Livery', or 'The Mill'— all air-conditioned.
- Adventure Camp: Campers stay in bunkhouse style platform tents, nestled in the woods and overlooking the Gunpowder River. While not air-conditioned, the area is shaded and tents have canvas walls that roll up for excellent air circulation and screen walls for comfort.
All cabins at Frontier Town and Fort Roller are air-conditioned, while other themed housing is designed to stay cool through shade, ventilation, and fans.
We’re happy to answer any other questions you may have about overnight accommodations!
Do campers get to play paintball at RVR?
Yes! Paintball is offered as an elective activity for Fort Roller Classic and Adventure campers, as well as Frontier Town Classic and Adventure campers during afternoon activity time.
- Equipment: All gear (marker, mask, paintballs) is provided—campers may not bring their own.
- Cost: Free.
- What to bring: Closed-toed shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt that can get stained. (Paint usually washes out, but not always.)
Safety First
- All players must wear protective masks at all times—removing a mask, even once, ends participation.
- Games are supervised by at least two trained referees.
- Risks of injury are very low if rules are followed, but paintballs can sting and may leave small welts on unpadded areas.
- For best comfort and protection, we recommend long pants and sturdy closed-toed shoes (cleats are best for the terrain).
Parents can help by encouraging campers to follow all rules and safety guidelines.
Will my campers in different programs get to see each other?
Yes, campers within the same campus (all Fort Roller programs, or all Frontier Town programs) share meals and enjoy several activities together throughout the week. However, Fort Roller and Frontier Town are kept separate due to the wide age range of campers.
If you have siblings or friends in different campuses and would like them to connect during the week, please let us know—we will do our best to arrange or accommodate visits. You can also discuss this with a camp director at check-in.
Camp Procedures
What is expected of my camper?
In order to have the best week possible, we ask campers to commit to these Community Guidelines:
-
Respect Others: I commit to respecting all campers and staff at RVR.
- I will do my part to create a wholesome environment.
- I will refrain from bullying speech and actions.
- I will refrain from any inappropriate or unwanted touching of others and their belongings.
- I will choose kindness, togetherness, and an open mind towards others.
-
Respect RVR: I commit to respecting RVR’s property and program.
- I will follow camp guidelines and procedures.
- I will refrain from damaging property and equipment.
- I will clean up after myself and leave areas better than how I found them.

- I will let a staff member know if there are issues with other campers or camp staff.
- I will embrace challenges and try new things to the best of my ability.
What could get my camper sent home?
The safety of all guests and staff is our number one priority. Therefore, RVR reserves the right to dismiss anyone immediately for inappropriate behavior, including but not limited to the following:
- Threats of harm, or causing harm, to self or others
- Possession of drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, nictoine or vape products
- Weapons of any kind
- Sexual harassment
- Theft
- Property damage
- Fraternization
- Bullying
- Curfew violation
- Infractions of camp policies
What happens if my camper is dismissed for any of the above or other behavior issues?
Campers dismissed for inappropriate behavior will not receive a refund or prorated fees. RVR also reserves the right to deny their return to camp in the future.
Can my camper's belongings be searched?
Yes. RVR reserves the right to search any participant's belongings for signs of pests (including, but not limited to, lice and bed bugs), illegal substances, weapons, or any other items not permitted at camp. Searches may be conducted at our discretion for the safety of all campers, staff, and TNT.
These searches may be preventive (such as at check-in) or conducted during the teen's stay if a safety concern arises. RVR may take action to protect campers, staff, and TNT which could include sending your camper home, asking parents to remove infested luggage or property, or confiscating banned items.
We also use security cameras throughout campus and cover many safety topics during staff training to help maintain a safe environment.
How is medication handled at camp?
RVR Health Services staff collect and dispense medications according to directions provided. To ensure your camper's safety, please follow these guidelines:
-
Medication Forms: Bring the required completed Medication Administration Authorization form to check-in. (You can also upload to your their RVR account in advance or fax to Health Services at 443-712-1015.)
-
Original Containers Only: All medications must be in pharmacy-labeled bottles (no daily pill boxes) and should contain only enough for the week of camp. Both prescription and over-the-counter medications require a doctor-signed authorization form.
-
Administration Times: Medications are usually dispensed after breakfast, lunch, dinner, and before bed—unless otherwise prescribed.
-
Exceptions: Fast-acting inhalers and epi-pens may stay with your camper, but still need to be checked in by Health staff.
-
Injectable Medications: A written physician order is required for nurses to administer injections (including insulin and growth hormone replacements).
-
Over-the-Counter Medications: Common medications such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, and Benadryl are provided by our Health Center—please do not pack extras. (Note: we do not stock aspirin or aspirin-containing products.)
Are there any limitations to camp meal plans?
While we aim to serve meals that the majority of campers enjoy, we recognize that not every camper will like everything. We offer menu variety (e.g., not serving beef at three consecutive meals) but cannot accommodate every individual need due to our setup and Health Department regulations.

- If you have questions or concerns about your camper's allergy, please contact us prior to the start of camp.
Bringing Your Own Food
- Due to Health Department regulations, food cannot be stored in the kitchen or in camper housing.
- If a camper cannot eat most of the meals provided, you may send supplemental nutrition bars (e.g., PowerBars, granola bars) or nutritional shakes (e.g., Ensure) with them. These items will be kept by the Health Center and can be picked up after meals.

How does RVR select and train its counselors?
We believe the camper–counselor relationship is one of the most important parts of a camper’s experience. That’s why we take great care in recruiting and training the best possible staff.
- Recruitment: Our teams actively recruit year-round, visiting college campuses and connecting with candidates through various channels. Applicants complete an extensive application, provide references that submit detailed Personal Evaluation forms.
-
Screening: Every staff member undergoes a comprehensive screening process, including:
- Background check
- NSOPW (National Sex Offender Public Website) check
- Fingerprinting
- Child Protective Services check
- Motor Vehicle Records check (if applicable to their role)
- Training: Hired staff participate in 10 days of training, which includes safety procedures, program preparation, and certification in First Aid and CPR (with at least one certified staff member assigned to every cabin).
Year after year, we are committed to hiring top-quality staff so you can feel confident that your camper is in excellent hands.
Most of RVR’s summer staff are 18 and older, and all counselors must meet this minimum age requirement.
We also offer our TNT program for students ages 14–17 who want to serve on our field, store, kitchen, or dining crews. Please note, this teen program does not oversee campers.
For more information about these opportunities, visit our Work at RVR page.
What are the staff-to-camper ratios?
Our staff-to-camper ratios vary depending on camper age and the program they are attending.
Minimum ratios are as follows:
Overnight Camp:
- Ages 15–17 → 1:10 (Frontier Town)
- Ages 13–14 → 1:8 (Frontier Town)
- Ages 9–12 → 1:8 (Fort Roller)
- Ages 7–8 → 1:6 (Cadets)
Day Camp:
- Ages 9–10 → 1:10
- Ages 6–8 → 1:8
- Ages 5 and under → 1:6
These ratios reflect minimum staff-to-camper ratios during free time and general camp activities. Additional staff are present for higher-risk activities such as archery, ropes courses, and paintball to ensure camper safety.
Can my camper room with a friend?
Yes! If your camper would like to room with a friend, you can submit a roommate request during registration. Simply enter the friend’s name in the Roommate Request tab of your account. If you receive a roommate request from another family, log into your account, select Registrations, scroll to the Roommate Request tab, and enter the provided request code.
Roommate Request Guidelines:
- Each camper may request up to three friends (four campers max per room).
- Campers must be enrolled in the same program and session.
- Requests apply to room assignments only, not bunks. Bunks are assigned first-come, first-served. Arriving together at check-in on Sunday at 3:00 pm can help friends bunk nearby.
- Campers must be within two grade levels of one another. For example, a camper who completed 8th grade may room with a 7th, 9th, or 10th grader—but not 11th.
- When needed, we may place older campers down a grade, but younger campers are not moved up.
- We will do our best to honor roommate requests, but they cannot be guaranteed.
- Both families should confirm the request during registration to improve the chances of matching.
- Roommate group limits: Requests are limited to four campers per group, and multiple groups cannot be merged into a single cabin. This policy helps maintain a healthy cabin dynamic and ensures every camper feels included and valued.
- Privacy Note: For camper safety, we cannot share registration or session details for any camper other than your own. Please contact the other family directly for confirmation.
How does camper bank and spending money work?
RVR offers a variety of stores and shops where campers can buy gifts, crafts, and snacks. Campers use a computerized banking system, so no cash is needed. Each camper wears a name bracelet for easy identification at checkout. You can add money to your camper’s account anytime through your RVR account.

Spending recommendations:
- Consider setting a budget for your camper’s purchases and discuss in advance how they use the money: snacks, candy, crafts, and souvenirs
- For most campers, $25–$100 for the week is a typical range.
- Monitor the account balance anytime online.
What happens to the remaining balance in my camper’s account?
There are two options for handling any remaining balance on your camper’s bank account:
-
Donate the remaining balance to RVR:
During registration, you can choose to donate any leftover funds as a tax-deductible gift. Donations help support programs for the following summer. A receipt is available upon request. -
Refund the remaining balance to you:
If you did not select the donation option and your camper’s account has a balance greater than $5.00, the funds will be refunded electronically within 2–3 weeks after camp ends. Balances under $5.00 will only be refunded upon request.
What can my camper buy at the snack shop and trading post?
- The Wagon Wheel (Snack Shop): Campers can enjoy a variety of hot foods like mozzarella sticks, fresh-baked cookies, and pretzels, as well as candy, snacks, and cold beverages. Don’t forget to save room for Hershey Ice Cream!
- The Trading Post (Merchandise Store): Campers can take home RVR merchandise to remember their summer, including t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and souvenirs. Show off camp spirit with fun, trendy items!
Why is there a fee for sending emails to campers?
We charge a small fee for emails to help cover the costs of providing this service. RVR has invested significantly in making photos and emails available to families, and charging a nominal fee ensures we can continue offering them.
If the service were free, we would likely receive thousands of emails each summer, making it extremely costly and time-consuming to process and print them all.
The email system we use makes it easier for parents and relatives (including those out of state or overseas) to send messages to campers during the week. While there is a small cost ($1.00 per email), it helps us provide the service in a sustainable way.
Please note: while emails are delivered to campers, replies are not guaranteed. Some campers may choose not to write back, or responses may take a day or two depending on their schedule.
Regular mail is still always an option, though it does not offer the same timeliness.
Is RVR inspected or certified?
-
State and County Compliance: RVR complies with the MD COMAR for summer camps and is inspected by both the state and county several times each year.
-
ACA Accreditation: RVR is also accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA), which requires us to meet and exceed industry-wide standards of excellence in camping.
